Limited Edition Prints

This is a picture I took of an American Bald Eagle at Lake Shasta. It is one of my all time favorite wildlife photographs. It was the inspiration that finally got me off my butt and started on this project. You can read more here.

So, with out further ado, here it is!

I finally pulled the trigger on a project I've been considering for several years. I've thought about creating a series of limited edition prints of some of my favorite photographs. The plan was to purchase a large format photo printer, spend some quality time in the digital darkroom, create a web presence and see if it resonated with a market.

Well, step one is complete. Epson pushed me over the edge with a rebate on their pro-consumer class Stylus Pro 3880 printer. It will handle media to 17*22 (up to about 36" with some extra effort) on archival quality paper.

So, I'm off and running. Next up, selecting some of my all time favorite images. No mean feat when you consider that I have over 40,000 digital pictures to choose from. Then the climb up a steep learning curve will commence. Some hardware to calibrate my monitor will need to be procured as well as an appropriate color profile for my printer. Then a series of test prints on the various type of media to determine the final process steps to achieve what I envision. Not an inexpensive process when ink cartridges cost about $60 a pop and the printer holds 9! Did I mention that paper runs about $6 a sheet for the good stuff?

The pictures below are those I hope will have a broad appeal. They have been cropped to about the same aspect ratio as a 16" * 20" print but will likely be adjusted for the best presentation once the workflow has been established. The prints will be on 17" * 22" paper to allow room for the edition number and signature to be outside the actual print, you decide whether it shows or gets covered up with a matte.
